Monoliths

Two sections, one building

First semester studio project
Fall 2019
Harvard GSD
Instructor: Elle Gerdeman
The project brief required the design of a building in which two seemingly incompatible sections exist. This project explores an alternate reading of the two given sections beyond the preconception of the section representing rooms bounded by walls. What may intuitively be understood as interiors of rooms are instead interpreted as elevations of solid mass or voids in between. The resulting structure is a library formed by a series of monoliths that function as the literal building blocks of the building, but also act as circulation, rooms, and skylights.
